Antique carved religious wood panel, natural

Antique carved religious wood panel, natural

This antique carved religious wooden panel broken off many years ago from a Catholic saint's altar comes from the jungles of the Philippines, a southeast Asian archipelago colonized from the 1500s to the late 1800s by Spain, which brought to the originally animist islands the Catholic faith and its many accoutrements. You see in the last photos the painted ceiling and the facade of Loon Church, which was built in the now very Catholic tropical islands in the 1700s.

A carved garden make this wooden panel very beautiful. The original altar this came from was no doubt passed on from parents to children, let go only after generations of love had worn it to pieces.

Old-objects hunter Protacio found this panel in the hinterlands of the Philippine isles, and we, in turn, bartered it off him.
